Do you want to swim with manatees during your stay in Florida?

Have you ever gotten up close and personal with a manatee? Well here is your chance! I have lived in Sarasota, FL for many years now and have always been telling people about the gentle, sea cows, but have never had the opportunity to go and swim with them.
We recently took the short drive up to Crystal River, FL and rented our own pontoon boat to go and explore the warm springs where the manatees had their own sanctuaries. It is about a 2.5 hr drive North up 75 for the trip, but is soooo worth it! Make sure to get your snorkel gear, wear a wetsuit and get your underwater camera! The springs are a little chilly for us humans, but they are the perfect temperature for the manatees while the gulf is heating up with the spring temperatures. The best time to view the manatees is in the winter months from November to March.  There are many different tour options, or you can be your own tour guide and take out kayaks or pontoon boats. But heed the speed advisories, these gentle manatees are always around and motor blade marks are evident on many of the creatures, so always be careful to  boat slowly and cautiously in these waters as well as any of the close to shore waters where the signage and inlets advise to do so.
The Florida Game and Wildlife Commission has set designated spots where no humans can enter, but can only observe these docile creatures in their natural habitat. In these sanctuaries, you will see so many manatees just floating, bobbing up and down and gently rolling about each other. The manatees are resting most of the time in the sanctuaries, but then there are many others which are outside and swimming about all through the river and its small canals. You will see large mama manatees swimming with their smaller babies right behind them, it’s truly an beautiful sight.
While snorkeling around these sanctuaries and through the river, manatees come right up beside you, brush past and keep swimming on like you are not even there! The law says you cannot touch them and you are not to be bothering them in their habitat, but you can get right up close to them and they’re not afraid of coming to visit! The animals are quite large though and at some points, the water was murky and you couldn’t see them coming, so don’t be surprised if they sneak right up beside you or underneath you….it’s just their space and you are in it!
You will also see an abundance of other fish and wildlife during your excursion. We saw sheepshead, snook, and many more tropically colored fish. There are also beautiful egrets, blue herons and other birds sailing through the air above.
Make sure to put this adventure on your list of things to do while visiting Florida, It is an activity that you will never forget and you will be talking about for a long time! These beautiful, graceful, yet at the same time cute and clumsy animals are a truly magical experience and will truly make you feel like one with nature.
Need directions and more information on visiting the manatees? Come speak with the local, knowledgeable staff at the front desk at Tropical Beach Resorts. We are happy to look up information, print out maps and any other helpful tidbits that will aid in your enjoyment of your precious vacation time.

Time to Tee Up? Sarasota is home to a wide range of spectacular golf courses.

Sarasota is home to a wide range of spectacular golf courses!!

Expansive greens and golf courses for every budget and skill level

Sarasota is home to a wide range of spectacular golf courses!

Want to take a day off from the beach but still enjoy the gorgeous Sarasota weather? Why not play a round of golf at one Sarasota’s superior courses! The county is home to over 60 golf courses ranging from the budget friendly public courses, like Bobby Jones, to swanky private courses with big greens fees… and lots of options in between. Growing up in Sarasota with tons of country clubs and choices to play a round, learning a little about the game is just par for the course! My dad outfitted me with the cutest purple golf bag full of miniature sized clubs and took me out to the range to hit balls and even a to a few par 3 courses. Unfortunately, I never ended up being too great at it, but a day on the golf course with your dad is always the best! My father on the other hand, though definitely not a pro, really enjoys golfing and takes advantage of the excellent golf courses we have in town. From his local insight and my past experiences I have chosen three really enjoyable golf courses for those vacationers who want an outing away from the beach on their vacation to Sarasota or Siesta Key.

TIP: Most local courses offer discounted fees in the late afternoon! Whether you want to save a little money or enjoy the beach in the morning, take full advantage of better rates later in the day for your tee time.

Stoneybrook Golf and Country Club:

Stoneybrook Golf and Country Club

Stoneybrook Golf and Country Club

This Arthur Hills designed golf course is located just ten minutes from Siesta Key. The par 72 layout permits players of all skill levels but is best for those with a bit of experience. It is a challenging course with water hazards and natural wetlands, but is also one of the most beautiful courses in town. The course consists of Bermuda grass fairways and Tiffeagle Ultra Dwarf greens. The GPS on the carts will stop you from going too close to the greens and will send you a message if you’re running behind time. Didn’t bring your clubs? Don’t fret you can rent them on sight!

Calusa Lakes Golf Club:

Calusa Lakes Golf Club

Calusa Lakes Golf Club

Calusa Lakes gives you the true Florida feel with its course that twists through a diversity of Florida landscape and wildlife, while also providing a mid-Atlantic feel with the many pine and oak trees. There are multiple lakes around, though the course is still player friendly. You will find new Champion Grass greens as well as enjoyable rolling fairways and fair landing areas that are made to accommodate players of all abilities. You can also rent your clubs and cart while there. This location is a few minutes further away from the Key, but it’s a fantastic golf course to check out!

Misty Creek Country Club:

Misty Creek Country Club

Misty Creek Country Club

At Misty Creek Country Club, you can “golf in nature’s backyard”. This golf course is very unique in that it is the only course in Southwest Florida that is on a wildlife preserve with resident bald eagles. Not to mention, it is a championship golf course where almost every fairway is bordered on one or both sides by oak forests. This course is for serious golfers! It is a par 72 course with four sets of tees. Some wildlife you might see is deer, bobcats, wild boar, alligators and a variety of bird species. Here you can enjoy your golfing while experiencing the nature Florida has to offer.

What is there for kids to do in Sarasota?

There is plenty to do for kids in Sarasota!

There is plenty to do for kids in Sarasota!

Okay… the family trip is planned! You are headed to Siesta Key, Sarasota, Florida!  The kids are excited and you have extra sunscreen packed already! You  know the kids are going to want to to swim and play at the beach as much as possible…

But are we going to do to entertain them when they have had enough surf and sand?

Fortunately, Sarasota has more than our beautiful beaches to entertain the kids!

Planning a vacation on sunny Siesta Key and wondering….  is there something else to do if my little ones get bored with splashing in the gentle waves and building sandcastles in the sugar white sand? Not likely to happen… but the answer is an emphatic YES!  When you take a short ride  off Siesta Key just over the  the bridge you will find that Sarasota offers lots of one-of-a-kind kid fun! Sure we have malls and movies and all the stuff you would find back home – but my suggestion is to take your kids to at least one of the unique fun spots that those of us from Sarasota grew up loving!

Great sush in Sarasota, FL

Try Vizen while visiting for great sushi! Great food and atmosphere!

Vizen Japanese Cuisine:
If you’re looking for that upscale-chic sushi experience don’t miss out on Vizen, located in the Gulf Gate area, a neighborhood just over the bridge and minutes from the key! Vizen is known for having innovative rolls with an artistic presentation and exquisitely fresh, top quality fish. The menu is a just tad more pricey than our other choices, but there are always creative new specials and top-notch service. Although dress code is not a term in any Sarasotan’s vocabulary… if you are looking for a place to wear your fancy new sundress then Vizen is your choice. The Gulf Gate area is worthy of its own full blog entry, but since this one is about our favorite sushi haunts let us just mention that you should certainly plan to have a cocktail in one of the local night spots that range from neighbor hood bars to the newest trendy hot-spots. If an adult beverage isn’t your choice for an after-dinner treat there are lots of other options from Jim’s Small Batch Pastries (best in town) to cupcakes or ice cream shops. Our staff can help you create a dreamy itinerary. Here’s just one of many reviews on Trip Advisor. This from a couple who recently celebrated their anniversary with us:

“This place was definitely everything everyone else described it as. My husband and I were just there this past weekend for our anniversary and we could not have asked for more. The room was perfect, clean, cozy… I could go on and on… The staff, Buddy and Stephanie were extremely friendly, helpful on anything we needed. Very accommodating. All of their recommendations were right on the money. Finally, the location was PERFECT… We will definitely go back again next year. Thank you to all at Tropical Beach Resort for making this anniversary unforgettable…”

You’re sure to create a lifetime of memories. Reserve your dates today. Happy anniversary!
