Want to mix up your Friday nights in Sarasota this summer with free events?

One Friday a month in the summer the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall holds a FREE outdoor concert called Friday Fest on the Bay that takes place on their bayfront lawn. 2014 marks the 10th anniversary of this gift back to the community for the support Sarasota gives. Although it is widely known to locals, they are not the only ones that get to take advantage of this event. The bayfront lawn becomes filled with both locals and visitors to watch the sunset and take in the free music rain or shine. If bad weather does hit, the festival will be moved to the Grand Foyer.

What are your plans for Earth Day in Sarasota? Get close with nature at Oscar Scherer State Park’s 25th annual Earth Day Festival!

Earth Day Festival at Oscar Scherer State Park, April 27th!Celebrate Earth Day in Sarasota at Oscar Scherer State Park’s 25th Annual Earth Day Festival!

Oscar Scherer is just 6 miles south of Sarasota and is a true local gem. The park is located just off US 41 but as soon as you leave the road you are back to nature in a beautiful flatwoods preserve, home to the pretty little blue and white Florida Scrub Jay.  It is the perfect place to get your fix of Florida wildlife and nature while on your vacation to the Sarasota area. You can enjoy fifteen miles of trails through the park that allow you to go hiking, bicycling, and wildlife viewing. One of my personal favorites is canoeing or kayaking for a few hours along South Creek, a blackwater stream that flows to the Gulf of Mexico. You can also go fishing along the creek or lake Osprey, which is also the park’s swimming area. It is easy to make a day trip out of the park with the picnic areas that line South Creek which are equipped with grills and pavilions for a fun family outside dinning experience.

25th Annual Earth Day Festival:
Sunday, April 27, 2014 from 10:00am – 4:00pm
This is event is one the whole family will love, especially the kids! There will be activities such as a coloring contest, storytelling, a puppet show; along with events that will satisfy the rest of the family including live music, food vendors, tram tours, information and craft booths, demonstrations, and a photo exhibit featuring local photographers. The best part is the park’s normal entrance fees will be waived on this date in celebration of Earth Day. FREE FAMILY FUN! It doesn’t get much better than that.
