Flamingos at the Sarasota Jungle Gardens

Take a trip over to Sarasota Jungle Gardens where you can experience animals, plants, shows, playgrounds and more. This tropical park contains over 150 native and exotic species including birds, primates (yes, there are monkeys here!), small mammals, lizards, snakes, crocodiles, alligators and more. 95% of these animals are rescued by state or federal organizations from inhumane conditions, and the rest are donated. All are kept in large natural habitats. One of the favorites among tourists are the flamingo. Guests from all around the world marvel at these beautiful bright pink creatures who love the visitors. It is not unlikely that these friendly birds will come right up to you. Another much loved species is the fairly new addition to Jungle Gardens, the prairie dogs. These adorable little animals can brighten anyone’s day.

What is there for kids to do in Sarasota?

There is plenty to do for kids in Sarasota!

There is plenty to do for kids in Sarasota!

Okay… the family trip is planned! You are headed to Siesta Key, Sarasota, Florida!  The kids are excited and you have extra sunscreen packed already! You  know the kids are going to want to to swim and play at the beach as much as possible…

But are we going to do to entertain them when they have had enough surf and sand?

Fortunately, Sarasota has more than our beautiful beaches to entertain the kids!

Planning a vacation on sunny Siesta Key and wondering….  is there something else to do if my little ones get bored with splashing in the gentle waves and building sandcastles in the sugar white sand? Not likely to happen… but the answer is an emphatic YES!  When you take a short ride  off Siesta Key just over the  the bridge you will find that Sarasota offers lots of one-of-a-kind kid fun! Sure we have malls and movies and all the stuff you would find back home – but my suggestion is to take your kids to at least one of the unique fun spots that those of us from Sarasota grew up loving!

Mote Marine

You must visit the dolphins and manatees at MOTE Aquarium in Sarasota, FL

Mote Marine Aquarium
Mote Marine Aquarium is a world-renowned show case of research and over 100 marine species including manatees, dolphins, sharks and sea turtles. This is a great hands on learning environment for the whole family while visiting Sarasota! There are touch pools, interactive exhibits and working labs. They also have some new exhibits such as a narrated training session with sharks, a marine paleontologist attraction where kids can dig for fossils, and the seahorse conservation laboratory.

Siesta Key Paddleboard Time!

SUP on Siesta Key

SUP w/ Studio Rubylake on Siesta Key. Stand Up Paddleboard

Stand Up Paddleboarding,(SUP), is quickly becoming one of the most popular sports on Siesta Key! Recently, I decided to try paddle boarding myself. I wanted to be able to share a first- hand experience with our interested Tropical Beach Resort guests. Let me start by saying, I don’t think anyone would use the word “athletic” when describing me, and I can’t ever recall being referred to as graceful in my lifetime. Don’t get me wrong, I like to play outside and have fun… but I was seriously wondering if I would be falling off my SUP in the first five minutes. I called a couple of my friends (also fun- loving middle-aged women) that had never gone paddle boarding before and asked them if they would take a leap of faith, grab a couple boards, and hit the calm beautiful Sarasota waters with me while we made a video. We decided to take a popular Siesta Key instructor with us on this journey who quickly taught us the ins and outs of SUP, and offered to give us a private Pilates class on the water. Courtney Kees, from Studio RubyLake, immediately put us at ease, and we began to trust very quickly that we had a pretty good chance of staying on our boards. One of the first things I noticed was how spectacular our views were as we were standing up tall, spotting dolphins. I found my experience to be exciting and yet peaceful at the same time. It dawned on me that this was actually a really great way to get a super overall workout. Paddle boarding makes us use our balance and strength to remain upright while we propel ourselves in the water. This means that we are truly using almost every muscle at some point while still being gentle on our bodies. (Taking it easy on the joints and knees, thank-you!) Cardio fitness is said to greatly improve with SUP, and although I have not been doing it long enough to confirm this, I can confirm that it’s a great core workout and has helped me increase my balance.

My girlfriends and I really loved practicing Pilates on our boards. It definitely added some extra balance to the activity. The ambiance of being on the water along with the sunshine made the experience feel a lot more like fun than exercise.

The verdict came in quickly that we could not wait to schedule our next “paddle board girl- time”. Honestly, I don’t see us entering the next local paddle board race in October (http://www.sarasotasupseries.com), or spending 1,000’s of dollars on high end paddle board gear. I don’t think we will be finding ourselves discovered as local Paddle board celebrities, and it’s also unlikely that we will be featuring our “Pilates-Paddleboard six- pack abs” in future videos. However, it is very likely that we will be putting on the sunscreen, packing a little cooler, and taking advantage of paddle boarding in beautiful Sarasota as a regular pastime. We found a new sport we love and let’s be honest…. our roller blades have collected dust for a long time. We needed to find this sport.. we love it and we are actually working out and having a lot of fun!

If you are interested in renting paddleboards on Siesta Key contact Siesta Sport Rentals at www.siestasportrentals.com TIP: Point of Rocks has many beautiful rock formations and colorful fish.

If you would like to take a Pilates paddleboard class contact Studio RubyLake at www.studiorubylake.com

Guests staying at Tropical Beach Resorts can also have paddleboards dropped off right at the beach. Go ahead.. Dare to be a little adventurous… Encounter dolphins, manatees, and schools of fish while getting a full body workout while walking on water!

SiestaKey hotel sees growth in yearly numbers

Tropical Beach Resorts along with Sarasota county has seen another year of growth in our total number of visitors this year.

According to Visit Sarasota County (VSC), Sarasota County had 740,300 visitors in fiscal year 2013, spending $640,974,200 in the area economy. That is a 5.8% jump in visitors from fiscal year 2012 and a 10.2% increase in direct spending.
Tropical Beach Resorts is pleased that business is up.

The 2013 fiscal year ended June 30. Data from the Sarasota County Tax Collector also paints a positive picture for the area tourism industry.

With three months of revenue left to be calculated for 2013, Sarasota County has already raised $12,179,818 in revenue from the Tourist Development Tax — eclipsing the total revenue reported for 2011. This comes after multiple years of increased revenues from the tax. Development Tax revenue grew by 16% in 2011, and by 17.5% in 2012.

The Tourist Development Tax is a 5% charge on the revenue from rentals of six months or less. Revenue from the tax is used for tourism promotion, maintenance and renourishment of beach park facilities and beaches, sports stadiums, nature center facilities and promoting new tourist attractions and events.

Projects like the proposed dredging of Big Pass also rely on Development Tax revenue.
Tropical Beach Resorts General Manager said.” We are very pleased business continues to improve. We’ve done so many upgrades to the property and have continued to grow a talented staff… we couldn’t be happier it’s paying off.”
